Paine a step closer to making Test debut for Australia

By Super Admin

Sydney, Jun 8 (ANI): Australian wicketkeeper Tim Paine is hoping that his recall to the one-day team could prove a stepping-stone towards earning a Test debut.

Paine was inducted in the squad for the winter tour to replace the injured Brad Haddin after the senior wicketkeeper failed to recover from a bout of tennis elbow.

Haddin's problem has ruled him out of the June limited overs matches against England and may yet keep him out of the two Tests and Twenty20 matches against Pakistan in July, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Paine has played 17 one-day internationals since making his debut in September, scoring 111 against England at Trent Bridge in just his seventh match.

"That's the way I've got to look at it, Test cricket is the ultimate goal. At this stage, I don't think Brad's a certainty for the Tests, so doing well here could do me no harm,' he said.

Paine's former Tasmanian and club teammate Matthew Wade will take his place in the Australia A team to play Sri Lanka A in Queensland. (ANI)
