Justice Rao takes charge as chairperson of National Commission for Backward Classes

New Delhi, June 7 (ANI): Former Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court Justice (Retd.) Makani Narayan Rao on Monday took charge as chairperson of National Commission for Backward Classes.

The Central Government had appointed Justice Rao to the post on May 31.

Justice M.N. Rao, who hails from Nellore at Andhra Pradesh, obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Arts and Law from Andhra University.

In 1961, he obtained Master of Laws in Constitutional and International Law from Madras University under the guidance of Professor Alexandrowics an internationally renowned professor.

Justice M.N. Rao practiced in Andhra Pradesh High Court prior to his appointment as District and Sessions Judge in the year 1973. Between the years 1979 to 1983, he worked as Secretary (Law and Legislative Affairs), Government of Andhra Pradesh.

He was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in July 1986. He also served as the Chief Justice of High Court of Himachal Pradesh from November 1997 to April 1998.

National Commission for Backward Classes was set up under the National Commission for Backward Classes Act, 1993, pursuant to the direction of the Supreme Court in the Mandal case judgement for setting up a national body for Backward Classes at the Centre as a permanent body. (ANI)
