Porn haunts Chinese cellphones
Beijing, Jun 5: Internet users in China, who use their cell phones to access the internet, are yet again forced to deal with pornographic and lewd material while browsing.

"I don't know why porn pages can be seen again," Zeng Hai from Guangdong province is quoted as saying by'China Daily'.

The 17-year-old high school student said that he encountered a a website which included many lewd pictures when he was accessing net on his mobile phone.

He also informed that his classmates too had complained of the same thing.

Even though there is no answers to this problem yet, there seems to be an explanation. The Internet information safety group under Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has found spread of pornography on cell phone networks witnessed a resurgence in the country accounting for 12.5 million hits a day.

A report released on this matter noted that this trend is the latest roadblock in the ongoing campaign by authorities on porn being disseminated through wireless application protocol (WAP) sites on mobile phones.

In Dec 2009, nine Chinese Ministries started a nation-wide campaign against mobile porn. According to the the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publication, by the end of Mar 2010, over 140,000 illegal websites were shut down.

But 76 mobile websites were found with lewd content after a sample of 1,000 sites from May 21 to 27, noted the CAS report.

Among the illegal websites, 14 were registered earlier. But the number jumped to 52 so far this year. More than 12.5 million visits were made to those websites every day, it added.

Giving the reason behind the pornographic revival, CAS said, huge profits from charging pornographic sites are the main reason behind the resurgence of the lewd material, despite repeated crackdowns by the government.
