Siliguri, May 21: Madan Tamang, the All India Gorkha League President and Gorkhaland proponent, has been assaulted and killed in Darjeeling town, on Friday, May 21. He has been killed by some unidentified assailants, who attacked him with sharp weapons.
He was at a public meeting where he was allegedly attacked by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters.
"Tamang was attacked near Planters' Club on Friday, May 21 morning when he was supervising the arrangements for a meeting to be held later in the day. Miscreants hit him with kukris and swords, wounding him on the shoulder and stomach," informed K L Tamta, the Inspector General of Police in North Bengal. Police had to fire in the air, to disperse the mob from the venue.
The police officer also said that the meeting was to be held at Darjeeling Chowrasta but later shifted to Planter's Club as GJM opposed the suggestion.
Tamang had recently opposed GJM's stand on an interim set-up for Darjeeling hills, demanding Gorkhaland instead.
The shops and markets have closed down, immediately after the attack on Tamang.
