Madrid: Nadal thrashes Federer, breaks records

By Samyuktha

Madrid, May 17: In a record breaking feat, Spaniard Rafael Nadal defeated long-time rival Roger Federer to grab the Madrid Masters title.

Nadal not only thrashed Federer 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) to claim his third major clay title ahead of Roland Garros, but also clinched a historic 18th career Masters title on Sunday, May 17.

"Winning here at home is a dream," said Nadal.

With 18 masters title, the great Rafa has powered past tennis legend Andre Agassi, who has 17 titles to his credit, and world number one Federer, who has 16 Masters titles.

The Spaniard has also reclaimed the world number two ranking.

Nadal's Madrid triumph was preceded by brilliant clay court performances at Monte Carlo and Rome.
