“Caste panchayats are enjoying political patronage by the Congress and the INLD of Om Prakash Chautala in Haryana and this is why they are trampling fundamental rights of citizens with impunity," CPI(M) Central Committee member Nilotpal Basu said on Friday, May 14 while speaking to reporters.
Criticising the 'domineering' role of khap panchayats (caste councils) in Haryana, Mr Basu also alleged that the parties were doing this to get a upper hand in the upcoming panchayat polls in the State.
The Khap Panchayats "had managed to browbeat people with tacit support of the administration," added Mr Basu, who along with Haryana CPI(M) State secretary Inderjit Singh, raised a demand for curb on the pachayats and their 'illegal activities'.
The panchayats have been in the negative light in the media after a Khap Panchayat in Haryana ordered honour killing of the young couple for marrying against the 'caste laws'.
Young and educated Congress MP from Kurukshetra, Jindal, recently entered into a controversy after he came out in support of the panchayats and promised to move the Centre towards the panchayats' demand to ammend Hindu marriage laws
