Tornado strikes China: 23 killed, 161 injured

Beijing, May 6: Nearly 23 people were killed and 161 injured when a tornada hit China"s southwestern Chongqing Municipality on Thursday, May 6. Several houses and crops were damaged.

The tornado struck Dianjiang and Liangping counties at around 2.00 am (11:30 IST) after a torrential rain, a state—run Xinhua news agency

"At least 23 people died and 161 others were injured," it said quoting local government officials.

A rough static projected six deads and 34 injuries when tornado and hailstorm stuck Liangping county, while atleast 17 people were feared dead and 127 people injured in Dianjiang county.

The municipal government has started out their emergency plan and relief work. Officials are trying to determine the number of casualties to life and property.

The injured are being taken to a nearby hospitals and tents are being set up for those rendered homeless due to the tornado,
