South Africa thrash Afghanistan by 59 runs to seal T20 super eight berth

Bridgetown, May 6 (ANI): After having being comprehensively thrashed by India in their first game, the Proteas came back strongly against Afghanistan, beating the newcomers by 59 runs in the last group match of the ICC World T20 Championship at the Kensington Oval here.

The win has ensured South Africa a place in the super-eight stage of the tournament.

Chasing a modest target of 140, Afghanistan were all out for 80 runs in 16 overs.

For Afghanistan, Mirwais Ashraf (23) and Hamid Hassan (22) were the two main contributors with the bat.

Morne Morkel was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa bagging four wickets for 20 runs, while he was ably supported by Charl Langeveldt and Dale Steyn who scalped two and three wickets respectively.

Earlier, Afghanistan captain Nowroz Mangal won the toss and put South Africa into bat.

Jacques Kallis (34) and skipper Graeme Smith (27) provided a brisk start to the innings.

Later, JP Duminy (25) and Albie Morkel (23) batted with patience to built up the innings on the platform provided by the openers, and posted a respectable target.

For Afghanistan, medium-pacer Hamid Hassan was the most successful bowler, claiming three wickets for 21 runs. (ANI)
