'Cong didn't arrest Tiwari, why arrest Halappa?'
Bangalore, May 3: While Haratal Halappa's sex scandal became the latest weapon for Congress to raise a cry against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Karnataka BJP president K S Eshwarappa has rebutted the demands of the Opposition by dragging in ND Tiwari's name.
"Why should Halappa be arrested?" Eshwarappa questioned in response to the Congress' demand for Halappa's arrest and Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa's resignation in the wake of the latest controversy involving BJP in the state.
When former Andhra Pradesh governor ND Tiwari was not arrested for his involvement in a sex scandal, why should Halappa be put behind bars? the party president said, adding that any further decision on Halappa will be taken after the probe.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa announced that the probe into the alleged attempt to rape case have been handed over to the Criminal Investigative Department (CID). The CM has also expressed confidence that a 'pious' man like Halappa is bound to emerge innocent at the end of the investigation.
Haratal Halappa, who held a ministerial post, found himself in the middle of a controversy on Sunday, May 2 when a report emerged that he had attempted to rape a friend's wife. He quickly rendered his resignation from the post of food and civil supplies minister.
Following this, the victim, Chandravati and her husband Venkateshmurthy filed a complaint in DGP's residence in the night.
The complaint against Halappa is sufficient for the police to put the BJP leader from Shimoga behind bars.
