Mumbai, May 1: Lalit Modi is not only under the scanner of the Income Tax Department but is also on the hit list of the underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
Police has revealed that the underworld don had been conspiring to kill the former Indian Premier League (IPL) chief even before the recently concluded third edition of the cricket series began.
The dangerous D-company planned to eliminate him in Mumbai or Bangalore.
“He is on the hit list of Dawood. Besides he was also the chairman of the IPL when the tournament was on and hence security was provided to him during his visit to Mumbai. He would be provided security whenever he visits here," a senior police official is quoted as saying.
Dawood's men had also reportedly conducted a recce near Nirlon house at Worli in central Mumbai, where Modi's office is located.
The police official, however, refused to disclose any details on the motive behind Dawood's plan to kill Modi.
During the third season of IPL, a slew of controversies surfaced in connection with Modi.
The IT department is currently conducting probe into the alleged financial irregularities in the IPL bidding.
Dawood Ibrahim's name shot up in the IPL saga when the office of former Minister of State for External Affair, Shashi Tharoor, who was also embroiled in the IPL Kochi ownership controversy, claimed that the MP from Kerala had received death threats from the D-company.
