Unwilling bride commits suicide in West Bengal

Malda, Apr 26: A 13-year-old allegedly committed suicide after she was pressurised by her parents to get married, police said on Sunday, Apr 25.

Firoza Khatun, a class V student, consumed poison on Saturday, Apr 24, at Mojampur village.

According to Firoza's uncle, Bhadu Sheikh, she was pressurised by her parents to get married, which she disapproved.

"She quarrelled with her father yesterday (Saturday, Apr 24) when he pressed her to get married. She was unwilling and drank poison later," Bhadu Sheikh told the police.

Firoza's father, Akhtar Sheikh is a labourer. Sources said that her elder sister, Sami, who was only 14 years of age, was married off in 2009.

According to police, several minor girls in the district were made to dropped out of schools by their cash-strapped parents and married off.
