Ruchika case: Rathore surrenders police medal
Chandigarh, Apr 23: Tainted former Haryana DGP SP S Rathore, convicted in the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case, has returned his Police Medal, almost three weeks after he was ordered bythe Centre to do so.
An official spokesman in a news agency report said that the Rathore has handed over his Police Medal to the DGP, who in turn has forwarded it to the Home Department 'in a sealed cover for further necessary action' on Friday, Apr 23.
"The president's Secretariat notification stated that the Police Medal for meritorious service awarded to Rathore vide this Secretariat notification dated August 15, 1985, is hereby cancelled and the medal is forfeited under rule 8 of the rules governing the award of Police Medal," he added.
However, the date of Rathore's surrender of the Police Medal to the state police following its cancellation is yet to be ascertained.
He said that Union Home Ministry is being intimidated about the surrender of the Police Medal by Rathore.
The former Haryana DGP was sentenced to six months imprisonment on DEc 22, 2009, for molesting 15-year-old Ruchika Girhotra in 1990. Ruchika committed suicide three years later in 1993.
