Chennai, Apr 21: The Madras High Court on Wednesday, Apr 21, ordered the Tamil Nadu Government to provide free laptop to a Class X student, which he was entitled to get under a scheme for meritorious students, but failed to get the benefit due to errorneous evaluation of his maths answersheet in 2009.
Petitioner R Ravindran of Nagapattinam district had secured 94 in maths which after re-evaluation was found to be 97. His overall total went up to 478 out of 500.
Ravindran was deprived of the laptop under the state government scheme due to the erroneous totalling of marks. 35 students, who had secured 465 marks were given free laptop in the district.
Directing the state government to rectify the mistake, Justice N Paul Vansanthakumar said that the petitioner was a brilliant student who deserves to get the benefit of the scheme.
"This case reveals how a meritorious student was put to sufferings due to negligence on the part of the examiners even though he has not committed any mistake".
"It was evident that the petitioner is a brilliant student, who has secured over 96.5 per cent is eligible to get the free lap top as per the scheme," he said adding "due to such mistakes innocent students are unnecessarily put to embarrassment".
"Hence it is expected that such mistakes are bound to be avoided by the department, which is conducting the exams", he said.
