Pune, Apr 19: A senior government official, hailing from Pune, was gang-raped by four men on Apr 11 while she was returning home with her husband and son from the Vaidyanath temple in Parli village of Maharashtra.

"While returning to Pune, the family stopped for snacks at a highway food joint. Accused Dipak Jawale saw the family and followed them in a hired Indica car with three accomplices. They robbed and assaulted the family and when the husband lost consciousness, they dragged the woman out of the car and raped her repeatedly," a police officer is quoted as saying in a news agency report.

The incident took place in Dhanora village, approximately 300 km from Mumbai.

"They left the woman naked on the road and fled. A village woman draped her in a saree and carried the victim to her car," Beed Superintendent of Police RP Sengaonkar told the news agency.

He said that initially the woman had only filed a case of robbery and assault. She later revealed that she was raped.

The police nabbed the four culprits on Thursday, Apr 15.

"The four accused, notorious for their activities, were arrested Thursday. Necessary action will be taken against them," Mr Sengaonkar said.
