With that statement DMK chief is trying to play peacemaker in the succession war between his sons M K Stalin and Union minister M K Azhagiri.
Speaking in an interview to Tamil magazine Nakeeran, Karunanidhi said, "No individual can decide who the leader of DMK is. In a democracy, every individual has the right to think who their leader is, but even I don't have the right to decide the leader. Only the party has that right."
Karunanidhi was replying to a question on Azhagiri's statement that he would not accept anyone other than his father as his leader.
When asked about reported difference of opinion between his two sons on the succession issue, Karunanidhi denied it saying, "They very well know that if they have any differences, it will only hurt me. They are not ignorant about this."
Stalin, who at present holds the post of Deputy Chief Minister, is widely speculated to be his successor.
