Kolkata, Mar 24: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee visited the 150-year-old heritage building on Park Street which was hit by a massive fire on Tuesday, Mar 25 to assess the ground reality.

The Chief Minister entered the building and reportedly stayed there for five minutes after having a brief discussion with the Police Commissioner Goutam Mohan Chakraborty and Director General of Fire Services, Gopal Bhattacharya.

After Bhattacharjee left, Chakraborty informed the media that the Chief Minister has directed them to launch operations to quickly rescue the people still trapped inside the ravaged Stephen Court building.

The police commissioner doubts that there is anyone still alive in the building but the personnel are trying to sanitise the building to check if there are some bodies.

The Chief Minister has also asked the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to pull down the damaged portion of the building.

On Tuesday, Mar 23, a major fire broke out in the building, which was used for both commercial and residential purposes. As per the reports available now, the death toll of the tragedy has been put up to 24.
