Couple held for poisoning children to death in WB
Kolkata, Mar 15: Unable to cope with deteriorating financial condition a couple in Hooghly poisoned their four chidren to death, media reports said.
Kaushal Chowdhury and his wife Preeti were arrested by the Kolkata police for killing their four children- Divya, 20, Prerna, 18, Govinda, 15, and Tiya, 11.
Police was informed about the incident by the woman's brother Madanlal Lohia who said that he had received a phone call from the couple, in which they admitted to their crime and said that they too would commit suicide.
"Kaushal told Madanlal that he had mixed poison in soft drinks that he had given his son and daughters. He also said that he and Preeti, 37, were going to commit suicide," Nirupam Ghosh, officer in charge of Rishra police station
Police said that the couple took the extreme step due to poor financial condition.
“After preliminary investigations, we have gathered that Kaushal was frustrated because of his joblessness," said Ghosh
The children- three girls and four boys were rushed to the Serampore Walsh Hospital, where the girls were declared dead on arrival. the boy died a little later.
According to the doctors in the hospital, children had been poisoned with aluminum sulphate.
The couple was arrested by the police in Howrah. They will be produced in court later in the day.
