Mobs torch shops in Bareilly, despite curfew

Bareilly, Mar 14: Tension continues in Bareilly as mobs torched about 20 shops in the old area of the city, despite curfew being clamped down in most parts of the city which was hit by communal violence.

Police said that fire tenders have been rushed to the Qutubkhana sabzi mandi, one of the oldest markets in the city, where shops were torched by some members of a community.

Sources said that the situation is now under control and curfew has been imposed in the violence-hit areas.

“After large-scale violence in which nearly 20 people, including a Superintendent of Police and some other policemen were injured, curfew has been extended to Subhash Nagar. The situation is tense but under control," the sources said.

According to official sources Uttar Pradesh goverment has ordered all the educational institutions to be closed down and helicopter has been provided to the police for aerial monitoring of the trouble-hit areas.

The authories have also deployed additional forces in the city.
