London, March 14 (ANI): Brit mums voted the good-old hug as the best present on Mother's Day, according to a new poll.

The survey, conducted by mystery shopping company Retail Active, saw nine out of ten mothers saying all they wanted was a hug.

A Mother's Day card took the second spot with, eight out of ten getting one on the day.

Mums with young kids valued a home-made card more than one bought from a store.

The survey of 2000 people also showed that flowers were the top gift to mothers on their special day, with 42 percent men and 36 percent women planning to give flowers today.

The average sum spent on Mother's Day gifts was 14.85pounds, with sons dishing out more money than daughters.

Glaswegians emerged as the least extravagant, while Essex mums saw an average of 22.35pounds being spent on them.

The survey revealed that men were almost twice as likely to take their mums out to lunch than women.

Actress Joanna Lumley was named Britain's most ideal mother in the poll.

"We were very surprised by this heart-warming result that what the majority of mums, 92 per cent, really want is just a simple hug and a big thank you," the Scotsman quoted managing director Julian Chamberlain, as saying.

He added: "More than a third of those polled, 66 per cent, said they thought mother's day had become over-commercialised, with men in particular believing the day had been hijacked by commercial interests.

"The majority of men, 63 per cent, said they spend more on their mum than on their Valentine sweetheart." (ANI)
