Thoubal (Manipur), Mar 13 (ANI): Manipur Police seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition here on Friday.
The seizure was made from a paddy field in Uhkhongsang village of Thoubal district following the arrest of a militant, Thokchom Biren Singh, an activist of the Revolutionary People's Front.
One AK-56 rifle, three magazines and 79 rounds of ammunition were recovered from him.
"When Biren was interrogated, he also admitted of hiding some more ammunition. So based on that information again our police commandos rushed to the area and after the extensive search of the paddy fields 49 mm pistols with magazines, 20 assorted foreign made grenades and ammunitions of different calibers, that is M-16 (271 rounds), AK ammunition (232 rounds), 9 mm (100 rounds), 7. 62 (4 rounds) seized. These items were recovered in sack and we are hopeful of more recovery as interrogation process is going on," said Clay Khongsai, Senor Superintendent of Police, Thoubal district.
In Manipur alone, more than half-a-dozen guerrilla groups are fighting more than 50,000 troops, some battling for freedom and others for political autonomy. (ANI)
