Woman Army officer court martialled for corruption
New Delhi, Mar 4: Major Dimple Singla has been court martialled after being found guilty of corruption charges.
Major Dimple is the first woman officer in the Indian Army to be court martialled.
She has been sentenced to 1 year of rigorous imprisonment for allegedly accepting Rs 10,000 bribe favouring an accused during his general court martial in Nov 2007.
She was charged under Section 69 of the Army Act, read with provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act; and under the Army Act Section 63 for acts prejudicial to court order and military discipline.
Under the Section 63, she is accused to have suggested a defence lawyer to accused Havildar Chandran, who was facing a court martial.
She was also accused for improperly visiting an Army officer, a defence officer in Chandran's case and asking him not to divulge details regarding the court martial proceeding to the media.
Major Dimple was arrested by the Army authorities on Feb 1, when she failed to attend the proceedings, and released later on the orders of armed forces tribunal.
