Cons to sue London jail for #500k over fowl egg sarnies!

London, Feb 23 (ANI): Prisoners in a south London jail are preparing to sue the Prison Service for up to 50,000 pounds, after they suffered stomach aches, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Close to 250 had fallen ill in September with suspected salmonella after eating dodgy egg-mayo sandwiches served in jail canteen.

The Wandsworth prison cons plan to sue for anything between 1,000 pounds and 5,000 pounds each depending on symptoms.

"Most of these prisoners think it's hilarious that they can sue," the Sun quoted a prison source as saying.

The insider added: "It is ridiculous they should be able to profit because they got a bit ill from a sandwich."

Meanwhile, solicitors have agreed to take up the case on a no-win no-fee basis.

Simon O'Coughlin, of Hodge, Jones and Allen, said: "We've been approached by around 80 inmates and I know other firms are involved. The Ministry of Justice is waiting for a report by the prison's infection-prevention team.

"We need to see what this report says. Any compensation will be based on if there's been any negligence."

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "This is an ongoing matter so it would be inappropriate to comment." (ANI)
