Shani blazes through last lap, grabs gold again

Richmond, Feb 18: With an impressive winning time of 1 minute, 8.94 seconds, American Shani Davis defended the Olympic 1,000m speed skating title at the Richmond Oval on Wednesday, Feb 17.

Four years ago Davis became the first African-American to clinch an individual gold medal at the Winter Games.

“It"s always nice to go out there and do it again," Davis said referring to his record-setting win in Turin four years ago.

South Korea's Tae-Bum Mo was denied of the first spot by Davis with a difference of 0.18 seconds, while the thrid spot was grabbed by American Chad Hedrick who finished at 1:09.32.

Davis whose performance in the lap lap not only won him the title but also praises, remarked, "Those last 300 meters were difficult. I was just trying to carry my speed and could feel it leaving me."

"When you're a world champion or an Olympic champion, you get this little thing on your back called a target. To go out there and win the 1,000 meters twice is truly amazing," he added.
