The new 138 number will provide a slew of value added passenger related services across the country and is expected to be launched soon.
"The new service has received the nod of the Department of Telecommunication and we hope to launch the service soon," railway sources are quoted as saying in a news agency report.
The 138 number is also expected to take the load off the existing 139 passenger inquiry number, which receives as many as 8 lakh calls everyday.
"The paid 138 enquiry number will complement the currently in use free 139 number which is already facing a problem of clogged network due to heavy traffic," the sources added.
This comes after the railway services and operations were severely disrupted due to fog among other factors over the past few months. The disadvantage of having a single passenger services number came to the forefront during this time.
Following this, the Railways upgraded its technology to cater to the passengers with quick and correct information.
An announcement on the number number is going to be made in the Railway budget, which is slated to be out on Friday, Feb 26, is reportedly going to announce the setting up of .
