Islamabad, Feb.2 (ANI): Women in Pakistan have not only been deprived of their basic rights, but they are also subjected to various violent activities in the country.
Not only in rural areas, but violent activities against women are being reported from cosmopolitan cities like Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi too.
According to a report by Aurat, a non-government organisation (NGO), over eight thousand incidents of violence against women were reported in the four provinces and Islamabad in 2009.
According to the report, 5,722 cases were reported in Punjab, 1,762 in Sindh, 655 in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), 237 in Balochistan and 172 in Islamabad last year.
The Daily Times quoted the report, as saying that about 1,384 women were murdered, 928 raped, 683 committed suicide and 604 murdered in the name of honour.
The most shocking part of the report was that about 928 cases of rape and gang rape were reported from across the country, out of which 786 were reported in Punjab.
Nine such cases were reported from Islamabad, which clearly highlights that how unsafe the capital city has become for women over the years.
Over 50 ghastly acts of stove burning were also reported from across the country. (ANI)
