Bangalore, Jan 27: Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy is now Dr Kumaraswamy as he has been awarded with an honorary doctorate from the University of Jerusalem.
HDK was conferred with the title for his 'contribution to rural people', said P Jayaprakash, vice president of Suyoga Ashraya and Development Trust, which approached the university seeking the honour for the ex-CM.
An awarding function was arranged at Yavanika on Tuesday, Jan 26. Since the JD(S) leader could not make it to the ceremony due to ill-health, his party colleague Ramnath Hedge received the award on HDK's behalf.
K Shivaram, an IAS officer serving government of Karnataka was also awarded with an honorary doctorate.
This comes after the present Chief Minister, BS Yeddyurappa received a doctorate from the Saginaw Valley State University, USA, for his contribution to 'public life'.
Incidentally, Dr HD Kumaraswamy had, back then, gone around ridiculing the doctorate conferred upon BSY.
These doctorates are no doubt giving our politicians a quick and easy make-over from politicians to scholars. However, this trend has raised several questions on the value of these doctorates.
Even when the news on BSY being awarded the doctorate surfaced in 2008, many questioned if the Chief Minister really deserves it.
