Provide shelter to homeless: SC tells Delhi govt
New Delhi, Jan 20: As the cold wave in national capital intensifies claiming more lives everyday, the apex court has directed the Delhi government to immediately take steps to provide shelter to the homeless.
Over the past few weeks, the cold wave across north India has claimed over 440 lives. The homeless and the downtrodden are the worst affected by the condition as they are exposed to the extreme condition.
Taking this into consideration, the bench headed by Justice Dalveer Bhandari asked the government to also provide food to the poor and homeless to help them fight malnutrition, which increases the chances of death due to the cold.
The court has summoned the Secretary, Food and Civil Supplies so that appropriate orders can be passed.
The apex court's direction came in response to a PIL filed by the People"s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), which accused the Delhi government of failing to provide food and shelter for the homeless and poor.
