Chennai, Jan 19: While the students of the all deemed universities, whose derecognition has been sought, have raised concern over their future, students of a university in Chennai resorted to violence.

Fearing derecognition of their courses, students studying in Saveetha University went on a rampage and damaged property. The stir started on Monday, Jan 18 night and continued even on Tuesday, Jan 19.

The authorities of Savitha university, which offers courses in engineering, medicine and dentistry, were not reachable for comment while the office staff maintained that nothing went amiss, say media reports.

On Monday, Jan 18, the the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court seeking derecognistion of 44 deemed universities, citing irregularities in 'deemed' tags given to these institutions during first term of the UPA government.

However, on Tuesday, Jan 19, HRD ministry Kapil Sibal urged the students not to panic as there would be steps taken to ensure that they would get a university degree even if the deemed university status is dropped.
