Jagraon, Jan 10: Indian youth Nitin Garg, who was killed by unidentified assailants in Australia, was cremated in his native town here on Sunday afternoon, Jan 10.

The body of Nitin was brought from Melbourne on Saturday, Jan 9 to New Delhi in a coffin.

Emotional scenes were witnessed as the coffin was opened to enable the family to see Nitin's body for the last time. The family members wept inconsolably.

21-year-old Nitin's younger brother Harish lit the funeral pyre in the local cremation ground.

A large number of people joined the funeral procession from his residence in Vijay Nagar locality of the town, about 50 kms from Ludhiana.

Garg was stabbed in a Melbourne park on Jan 2 while he was on his way to a fast food joint where he worked part-time.

Though he managed to drag himself to a nearby Hungry Jacks fast-food eatery, Nitin succumbed to his injuries later in hospital.

Nearly 1,500 attacks, many of them racially motivated, have been reported against Indian students and immigrants in different places in Australia.
