Argentina party: Pak hockey star, officials fined

Islamabad, Jan 9: Pakistan hockey star Rehan Butt and two team officials are being punished for indulging in un-Islamic activities in Argentina after the Champions Challenge tournament.

Rehan Butt was fined 100,000 rupees while coach Shahid Ali Khan and manager Asif Bajwa were fined 50,000 rupees each, the chairman of the National Assembly"s standing committee on sports has informed.

The national hockey team landed in trouble after pictures of them partying and drinking with the Argentinian woman surfaced in Dec 2009.

The team members are seen hugging a woman and drinking beer in the pictures aired on the local TV channels and circulated on the internet.

“Islamic culture does not allow us to hug a lady and have alcohol," committee chairman Jamshed Ahmed Dasti is quoted as saying by a news agency.

The manager Bajwa claims that the woman in the pictures was s a tournament liaison officer, whom all players considered as a 'sister'.

He added that the pictures were taken in the end of Champions Challenge tournament, after the team lost to New Zealand.

Expressing extreme contempt, Dasti said that the 'disgusting' activities of the team members made the team's failure in the tournament worse.
