Mountain View, Jan 6: Google launched its smartphone salvo against rival Apple on Tuesday, Jan 5 at the group's base here in California.
The pencil-thin touchscreen device named Nexus One is being marketed as the convergence between internet and phone.
The handset, which works on Google's Android software, includes applications such as Google Maps Navigation and a weather widget.
The phone, which boasts 'where web meets phone', enables its users enjoy voice recognition for text messages, emails, Facebook and Twitter updates , Google search, call contacts or obtain driving directions by speaking into the phone.
The new product released by the Internet behemoth is not only a strategic step to thwart competition from Apple, but is also an ingenious way to gain from the increasing direct web use by mobile phone consumers.
