Mumbai, Dec 26 (ANI): Mumbai is facing an acute water crisis as people are forced to use sewage water for their day-to-day chores.

Civic authorities have cut down supply by as much as 20 percent.

"Drinking water is our top priority. In Mumbai we have cut down the water supply by 20 percent and other water related task are also put on hold like washing of buses and trains and construction work because of shortage of water in the reservoir, as our main focus is on drinking water. Even the sea water will be used after desalination even though it might cost us some extra money," said Chief Minister Ashok Chavan.

The problem of water crisis is worst in slum areas as the residents of the area are forced to dig bore-wells around the periphery. Some are compelled to use the drainage water for household purposes.

"What to do? There is no other option left to us. These lawmakers and deputies are good for nothing. Instead of providing basic amenities to the residents they sit and do nothing. Therefore, we drink whatever is available for us to drink," said Nazir Hussain.

The water crisis is feared to compound as the Brihan Mumbai Corporation (Greater Mumbai Corporation) plans to keep the water supply shut for one day every week January onwards. (ANI)
