Melbourne, Dec. 25 (ANI): New South Wales leg spinner Steven Smith has been called into Australia's squad for the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan as standby for an injured Nathan Hauritz.
Off spinner Hauritz has been struggling with a long-standing groin injury with Australia selectors making a late call on Thursday for Smith to again join the team.
Smith was added to the squad for the Perth Test match last week against West Indies before Hauritz overcame a finger injury to play in the victory.
"Nathan has had a long-standing groin injury that has recently been causing more of a problem for him while bowling," said Cricket Australia physiotherapist Alex Kountouris.
"While the injury has been manageable he has reported an increase in discomfort after completing today's (Thursday's) training session.
"Nathan will train tomorrow morning and a decision will be made on his availability for the Test upon further assessment in the lead up to the match."
Smith will join the team in Melbourne on Thursday night, but will be free to resume interstate duties if not be required for the Test match. (ANI)
