Pune, Dec 25 (ANI): Workers of the civic body at Pune while digging to lay a new water pipeline came across over 800 old cannon shells on Thursday.
These canon shells are believed to be around 100 to 200 years old and they were found in the city's neighbourhood of Khadak, incidentally quite close to the Police Station of the area.
The shells were recovered just three feet below the ground level.
"By looking at the shells, it seems that they could be over 100 to 200 years old, used during the British period. But we have called higher authorities for inspection and even the bomb disposable squad for security measures. They have gone through the unearthed shells and further investigation will be carried out," said V V Nikam, Inspector, Khadak Police Station, Pune.
Further investigations are on to ascertain how such huge number of ancient ammunition lay under the ground all these years.
No sooner than the workers came across the shells, the bomb disposal squad was summoned as a precautionary measure. Reportedly, many of the unearthed canon ammo do possess explosive potential. (ANI)
