London, Dec 24(ANI): Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has revealed that captain Steven Gerrard has taken a lot of responsibility for the club's shabby performance in the Premier League so far.
Liverpool has lost seven of their 18 league matches, compared with just two defeats last season, and are 14 points adrift of leaders Chelsea to be in the eighth position.
"We have a lot of corridors at Anfield and we bump into one another a lot - and every time Steven says he wants to give more. We don't need to organize a proper meeting. Every time I speak to him I am sure 100 per cent he wants to give more. He is the captain and he is very important for the team and the club," The Sun quoted Benitez, as saying."He is someone who is pushing himself because he wants to improve. Steven knows he has to do that, but that for me is very positive. He realizes he is a very important player for us and we were analyzing his stats and he was doing much better recently," he added.Benitez further said that his side is improving and they will strike back to storm into the Big Four of the league.
"As the manager it is my job to show confidence in my players and to keep their confidence high. I am sure we can improve and finish in the top four, because we have a good squad and have shown many times we are capable of winning eight, nine or 10 matches in a row," Benitez said."We are Liverpool Football Club and we know we have come a long way in these five years. It has been disappointing because after finishing second last season with 86 points a lot was expected of us. Top four is more difficult because we have lost another game but I still believe we will do it," he added. (ANI)
