New Delhi, Dec 23: The light and late judgment in the 1990 molestation case of 14-year-old Ruchika Girhotra has prompted the National Commission for Women (NCW) to step in.

NCW has asked the Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda to appeal against the six-month prison term given to former director general of police (DGP) S P S Rathore for molesting teenager Ruchika Girhotra in Aug 1990.

"I am very sad after the verdict. I have written to the chief minister of Haryana to appeal against the lighter punishment in this case," NCW chairperson Girija Vyas said at a press conference on Wednesday, Dec 23.

"We are also thinking of pushing for civil damages for the victim"s relatives. The compensation won"t bring the girl back but at least it would provide some relief for those who are fighting the case for the last 19 years," she added.

This is not the first appeal against the judgment delivered by CBI court on Monday, Dec 28.

On Tuesday, Dec 22, CPI(M) MP Brinda Karat brought up the issue in Rajya Sabha stating that justice was denied to the victim.

Lawyers and other activists have also raised a cry about the issue.
