Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia), Dec. 16 (ANI): Malaysia's Mount Kinabalu now holds the Guinness World Record for having the highest via ferrata or protected mountain pathway in the world, at 3,776 metres above sea level.

Via ferrata means iron road in Italian, reports the New Strait Times.

It is basically a protected mountain pathway made out of a series of rungs, cables and bridges embedded into the rock face.

In Sabah, it was constructed and maintained by mountaineering experts, Mountain Torq Sdn Bhd.

The second highest via ferrata is in the Italian Dolomites mountain range, and is shorter by about half a kilometre.

There are more than 300 via ferrate in the world, with the largest concentration in Europe.

Mount Kinabalu has the distinction of being the first in Asia to have such a facility. (ANI)
