Washington, Dec 12 (ANI): Experts at the Boston University have developed the first completely wireless brain-computer interface.

The system works by converting brain waves in FM waves, which are then decoded to produce the sounds that patients unable to vocalize want to express. At this point, test participants using the new system are only able to synthesize vowels accurately, which is less than what can be achieved with wired BCI.

Cognitive neuroscientist Frank Guenther told Live Science: "It should soon be possible for profoundly paralyzed individuals who are currently incapable of speaking to produce speech through a laptop computer."

Guenther and colleagues detailed their findings Dec. 9 in the journal PLoS ONE. (ANI)
