Panaji, Dec 12: Expressing anguish over the state's deteriorating image amid surge in number of crimes, Goa Tourism Minister Fransisco Pacheco has said that the state may soon be dubbed 'rape capital' of the country.
The minister's statement came in response to the alleged rape of a Russian woman by a local politician John Fernandes.
Besides the allegation of sexual assault levelled against a politician, the victim's accusations against the police and the alleged threats for her life have added fuel to the fire.
Pacheco wrote to the Chief Minister Digamber Kamat on this issue.
In this letter the minister has drawn the CM's attention to the lack of confidence in the police among the public and the tourists.
"Goa may soon, if police inaction or ineffectiveness continues, gain reputation as the rape capital of India, a situation which cannot be permitted to develop at any cost," Pacheco noted.
The minister recently received a letter from Russian Consul General in Mumbai Alexander Mantytsky seeking proper investigation into the alleged rape and police harassment of the victim.
