Sydney, Dec 11: Russia's Dinara Safina has pulled out of the Brisbane International due to a back injury.
"Safina was very much looking forward to starting her year in Brisbane and it is a real shame that she will not be fit in time to attend," tournament director Steve Ayles said in a statement on Friday, Dec 11.
"I know she would have been working around the clock to try to be ready for the event but in the end time has beat her and she is still undergoing treatment," Ayles added.
The former number one's withdrawal from the Jan 2010 tournament which is an important leadup to the Australian Open has raised doubts on the player's fitness to participate in the prestigious Australian Open.
A Tennis Australia spokesperson said that the Russian has only informed them of the withdrawal from Brisbane International and that she was still hoping on making it to the Australian Open.
Safina was the runner up at the 2009 Australian Open, which was clinched by Serena Williams.
The 2010 tournament is scheduled to start on Jan 18 in Melbourne.
