Chidambaram tables Liberhan Report
New Delhi, Nov 24: The Home Minister, P Chidambaram tabled the English version of the Liberhan Commission of Inquiry report on the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Nov 24.
This came after the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who is presently in US reportedly called up Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and asked him to convene and emergency meeting to clear the action taken report (ATR) and the report of the commission.
The Congress-led government was forced to take this step after a newspaper report revealed details of the commission's report leading to an uproar in the Parliament on Monday, Nov 24.
As the newspaper report claimed that top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders such as LK Advani, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Murli Manohar Joshi were indicted in the case, BJP led protests in both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha demanding the tabling of the report immediately.
The Liberhan Commission headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Liberhan was formed two weeks after the Dec 6, 1992 event. After 17 years, the commission handed over the report to Manmohan Singh on Jun 30.
