Heavy snow storms kill 40 in China
Beijing, Nov 14: Unexpected snow storms across northern China have killed at least 40 people and destroyed buildings and ravaged several thousand acres of winter crop.
In a statement on its website, Civil Affairs Ministry's on Friday, 19 said that 19 of the deaths were due to traffic accidents related to the storms.
7.5 million people have been stranded or otherwise affected by the storms which began Nov 9.
The storms have destroyed 500,000 acres (200,000 hectares) of winter crops and have caused an estimated economic losses of 4.5 billion yuan (US $659 mn), the ministry said.
This is the heaviest snowfall the country has seen ever since it started recording it in 1949.
