According to the market research firms IDC and Gartner Inc, the Dell was the only top-five PC maker to see its shipments drop in the third quarter on a year on year basis. Loren Loverde, an analyst for IDC said that the company struggled to reach consumer laptop shoppers which is the industry"s biggest source of growth currently.
Acer, on the other hand, saw a surge of 25.6 per cent in shipments last quarter accounting for the fastest growth among the top PC makers. Acer was also supported by the sales of low-cost netbooks.
Speaking on Dell, Loverde said, “They"re dropping for the same reason that they have been having trouble over the last couple of years: They"re more focused on US commercial desktops than all their competitors."
Pointing out that the market has been growing in retail of portables, Loverde said this is where Dell failed.
Apple Inc, maker of the Macintosh computer was the one ranked in the fourth position.
