Serena Williams reclaims World No 1 ranking

Beijing, Oct 7: With an easy win in the second round of the China Open on Tuesday, Oct 6, Serena Williams stormed past Russian Dinara Safina to regain the world No 1 ranking.

Defeating another Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-2 in the second round, the American player reclaimed the ranking by grabbing it from the current top-ranked Safina who could not get past the early round at Beijing.

Speaking on the ranking which will officially be released next week, Williams said, "It feels pretty good. I'm really excited, I guess. I don't want to put too much pressure on myself, but I'm obviously happy to be there because I feel like I've been working so hard all year and just happy to be back."

Safina's loss to wild-card entry Zhang Shuai of China in the second round Monday, Oct 5 not only cost the Russian the ranking but also made Zhang the lowest-ranked player to defeat a No 1 player.
