Indian boxer Vijender Singh ranks world number one

New Delhi, Sep 29: Vijender Singh has achieved yet another milestone for Indian boxing by becoming the world's top-ranked pugilist in the middle weight (75kg) category.

With 200 points, 23-year old boxer is ranked higher than the reigning champion Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan, who defeated Singh in the World Championship semifinals in Milan.

World Championship bronze medallist not only won the India's maiden World Championships medal in Sep 2009, but was also the one to break India's Olympic jinx with his bronze in the Beijing Olympics.

"I am obviously elated at being ranked the highest in the world. It's a fantastic feeling and would motivate me to do better in future events," Vijender said.

The International Boxing Association's (AIBA) list which was updated after the Milan event includes another Indian- Thokchom Nanao Singh. Former world youth champion's ranking has slipped three slots and he stands eight in the light fly weight (48kg) category.
