Suspended Malay Indian Congress leader apologises for 'Slipper' remark
Kuantan (Malaysia), Sep.17 (ANI): Suspended Paya Besar Malyasian Indian Congress (MIC) division deputy chief M. Sukumaran has apologised for saying that a "garland of slippers" should be placed on a picture of former prime minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad during the MIC general assembly on Sunday.
The Star quoted Sukumaran as saying: "I have high regard for Tun (Dr Mahathir) for his immense contributions to the country but emotions got the better of me when I spoke. I had no intention to hurt the feelings of anyone, particularly Dr Mahathir, as the words just came out. I hereby wish to submit my humble apology to Tun Dr Mahathir for the grave expression, which has seriously hurt his feelings. I feel very sorry and am prepared to face the party's disciplinary board."
On Tuesday, MIC president S. Samy Vellu announced that the party had suspended Sukumaran with immediate effect.
He said the party would await the recommendation by the disciplinary committee to the Central Working Committee before deciding on any further action. (ANI)
