New Delhi, Sep 11: While the Sikhs around the world are trying to earn their rights to wear turbans and have beards, Muslims in India are fighting similar battles.

The Nirmala Convent High School, Madhya Pradesh which had problems with Muslim student's sporting a beard to the school was told by the Supreme Court on Friday, Sep 11 to let the student continue his studies in the school.

The apex court bench consisting of Justices B N Agrawal and G S Singhvi termed the school's decision to remove the student, Mohd Salim because he refused to shave his beard on religious grounds as 'ridiculous'.

However, this comes after the earlier bench consisting of Justices R V Raveendran and Markandey Katju has made controversial observations and had dismissed the student's plea. Justice Katju has said that country cannot be Talibanised by insistence on sporting a beard.

The student then filed a review petition and the case was posted for fresh hearing.

Interestingly, in a similar incident, a Muslim girl in Mangalore was not allowed to enter the college wearing a headscarf. The college refused to let her in the campus citing that a headscarf or a burqa (face veil) violated the dress code of the institution.
