Kolkata, Aug 24: One person was killed and 15 others sustained injuries, when a clash broke out between members of two football clubs over a match that was being held at Shikharpur on Sunday, Aug 23, Deputy Inspector General of police S N Gupta said.
Infuriated over the death, a mob set fire to a resort 'Vedic Village', one of city"s leading luxury resorts in Kolkata, alleging that the attackers had taken their shelter there.
Gupta said, "Ten fire tenders have been rushed to douse the fire and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) deployed."
Sources said that the incident occurred after one of the participating teams could not accept their defeat in the tournament semi-final, and led by some miscreants came back to the ground and started firing and hurling bombs indiscriminately.
Robertson, Director of Vedic Village said, "There was a local football match going on outside our property and there was some altercation between two teams. There was some enragement and they (put) this place on fire, our main building. The damage is limited only to the main building."
