Flintoff gets green signal for final Test farewell

London, Aug.11 (ANI): England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has got the green light to make his emotional Test farewell in the Ashes decider at The Oval.

Freddie's specialist is reported to have told him on Monday that his wonky right knee can withstand five more days' cricket.

"The swelling in his knee has significantly eased following the decision to rest him for the Fourth Test at Headingley and, subject to further rest and intensive treatment, he will be available for selection for the Fifth Test," The Sun quoted an ECB spokesman, as saying.

Facing Australia at The Oval next Thursday will let the all-rounder receive the thunderous send-off from the crowd that he craves. The news is a big boost to England following their defeat by an innings and 80 runs at Leeds over the weekend that levelled the series at 1-1.

Freddie was furious after captain Andrew Strauss and head coach Andy Flower ruled him out of that match - even though he insisted he was fit.

Flintoff will continue to undergo daily rehab and wear the Game Ready device, which automatically ices and compresses his knee during the night.

England's squad for the match is to be named this weekend.

Strauss and Flower will be delighted to have Flintoff back, but they will again need to be convinced that he can bowl at least two spells each day.

Flower said: "I think we'd like to know early whether Freddie is fit - we don't want to leave the decision too late."

Meanwhile, swing bowler James Anderson, who tweaked his hamstring while batting in the first innings at Headingley last Friday, will undergo intensive treatment this week in order to be fit for The Oval. (ANI)
