30 people feared dead in Uttarakhand landslide

Pithoragarh, Aug 9: At least 30 people were killed and 43 others were missing on Sunday, Aug 9 in a massive landslide caused by heavy rains in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, official sources said.

Official sources also said, "At least 16 houses were destroyed in Chachna, Lah and Rumiadola villages trapping 43 people, including 11 children and eight women, following heavy rains in Mushiyari block."

"While,15 bodies have been recovered so far, it is feared that some may have been washed away in nearby river or may be buried in the debris," the officials added.

Chief Minister Ramesh Pokriyal said, "It's a major tragedy. There has been extensive damage in the three villages."

"An ex-gratia of Rs one lakh will be given to the next of kin of those killed, while those injured in the incident will be provided free treatment by the government," the chief minister said.

He also said that security personnel of the Indo-Tibetian Border Police have been appointed for the rescue work.
